Hi everyone. I had a very restful day today. Yesterday was pretty busy. We are not going far each day but we sure are zig zagging a lot. We went to an old building in Litchfield to the 66 visitor center. All these centersseem to be in old buildings that used to be something else. When we went to the Skyview drive in I pushed a button to hear people tell stories about it. One very elderly gentleman remembered when they were building it. No one had ever heard of a drive in. He explained that it completely canged the social dynamics of the town. There was the playground in front of the screen and tables and chairs at the snack bar. People would meet to talk and eat and even Dance. A Lady told of being a ticket taker and seeing blanket covered lumps in the back seat that she knew had people under them. Also stories of trunks opening and kids climbing out.
I really enjoyed Mt. Olive and the Texaco station. No one there. Doors were open, bins of t shirts and a note to find your size and leave money in the envelope. The honor system at it's finest. . Staunton had Henry's ra66it farm. Real rabbits and VW's. So much fur and dust covered junk all around inside and out. Someone in our group started talking Chevy's and wewere there for a half hour until some people from England arrived and we made our escape. We took a wrong turn and discovered Country Classic cars. Acres of old cars for sale. Most under cover in the longest sheds I have ever seen. All for sale. I have never seen so many cars in one place for sale. We found an 8 Passenger Cadillac for Russell that might be bigger than Baby. Even had a 57 that was a pretty blue but a lousy paint job. On to Livingston and the old highschool for a banana split in a diner. Lots of funny stuff outside. In Edwardsville we passed several police cars escorting runners with the Olympic torch. It reminded us of when the torch was run down Danville Blvd. In Mitchell we saw the Luna Cafe where Al Capone gambled in the basement. Meals were served on the first floor and Upstairs were Ladies of Ill repute. When the neon cherry was lit on the sign, the girls were in. Ended the day seeing the Bel Ir Drive in sign which is the only part remaining. Going to dinner with the J's so maybe another blog tonight although I really have nothing to write about. Hugs from Jr.
