Good morning everyone. It is 6:30 here and 1 am sitting up in the front of Cmor and the people are still in back keeping warm. temperature has dropped during the night so being such a good sock monkey, I got up and closed windows. I guess my fur is thicker than theirs. Yesterday was really interesting. We headed to Lava Beds National Monument. Headed for the Southern entrance but the road was closed. Back out to hwy 97. My people had big discussion. "The closure sign should have been on Hwy. Maybe this is one of the closed Calif. parks." They were really grumbling for awhile. Then we saw a sign for Lava Beds Petroglyph Point, so Cmor turned off hwy again. huge cliffs, very textured. Full of crevices with birds, including owls. We looked along ground below for owl pellets but didn't see any. we decided to try to get into the park from the north. Following signs, we were on a gravel road. Now Cmor was the one grumbling. only two miles and we joined a paved road into the next section of park. everyone was happy. Next stop, Hospital Rock. Donna and I climbed up to see what it was. Don kept Cmor company. Good views across the lower end of Tule Lake Sump area. Temporary hospital was set up here during Modoc Indian and government war. Traveling has sure taught me that history keeps repeating itself. "might means right". So horribly unfair.
On the road again to Captain Jack's Stronghold. Donna read to us on the way here, explaing about the war and Modoc Chief Captain Jack hiding out here with his 60 tribemates. we did the loop thru the Lava bed. Crevices, shallow caves and walls the indians and later soldiers built. Saw the cave where Captain Jack lived with his two wives and daughter. Don said, imagine trying to fight a war and manage two wives! I was wishing Drew was here to climb with us. lots of great hiding places. Good thing Don carried water for us. It was really hot. Drew, if mom is reading you any of this, look at the picture of the cliff. Try to find the biggest stick nest. I will give you a clue. look for white stuff under the nest. I wonder what that is!
Into Oregon and a stop at the visitors center in Klamath Falls and Lunch. Then on to Chiloquin and the Collier's Logging Museum. We spent hours here. A whole village was made with cook house, and cabins from the 1800's. they were brought here from surrounding areas. Each had a story about the people that built and lived in them. Then there was the machinery. Early examples up to the modern machines. Very, very interesting. I decided I was too tired after climbing all over them, so we stayed here at their campground. I am looking at maps and deciding where I will take my people today. I think I will have a banana while I wait for them to get up. Have a good day everyone, I know I will.
